POSTPARTUM AYURVEDIC DOULA CARE

Traditional postpartum care for new mothers in the first 6 weeks after birth.

Honoring the mother

Postpartum Ayurvedic Doula Care

Ayurveda means “the wisdom of life” and is a traditional healing system that has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years.

Birthing a baby marks a new beginning for both the baby and the mother. In Ayurveda, the first 42 days postpartum, known as the Sacred Window, are crucial, as the care a mother receives during this time impacts her health for the next 42 years.

While conventional maternal healthcare focuses almost completely on prenatal care, Ayurveda offers a complete system with a focus on postpartum care and healing of the new mother for long-term health for mom and baby.

The role of the Postpartum Doula within Ayurveda is to create an environment conducive to relaxation, bonding, and space for integration for the baby, mother, and family. With proper Ayurvedic planning, the postpartum phase can be a rejuvenating and empowering experience for the entire family.

What is Postpartum Doula and Ayurvedic-trained Postpartum Doula?

The root word of doula comes from ancient Greek, meaning “with woman” or a female helper. While conventional postpartum care focuses on the newborn, Ayurveda emphasizes the mother’s well-being, ensuring they can feel empowered with good health and have the strength needed to care for the baby, recover from the birth, and enjoy the new motherhood experience.

As a Postpartum Doula trained in Ayurvedic practices, nutrition, and clinical herbal medicine the postpartum care families receive is comprehensive.

I offer other services that conventional postpartum doulas may not provide including Abhyanga massage and Marma therapy, therapeutic cooking and meal plans, belly binding, and tailored herbal support focused on nourishing the new mother while creating space and time for bonding with baby and family.

What's the difference between a midwife, birth doula, baby nurse or nanny?

A midwife is a trained medical professional who can do many of the same things doctors do. They will see you for your monthly prenatal appointments and will deliver your baby.  A birth doula provides emotional, physical, and educational support to the birthing parent during pregnancy, labor + delivery.

A baby nurse is a childcare professional who assists with childcare needs throughout the night, and take charge of the childcare. Babysitters and nannies also assist with watching and entertaining children, but rarely during the night.

A postpartum doula focuses on taking care of the family following the birth of baby. A conventionally trained postpartum doula may offer assistance with light housework, watching younger children, and basic education on breast/chest feeding.

An Ayurvedic postpartum doula focuses on caring for the mother so they can recover faster and bond with their new baby and family. They may offer Abhyanga oil massage, therapeutic prepared meals, herbal support, light housework to keep the home feeling calm, and supports the family as needed to create a positive postpartum experience.

They play very different roles but can all be beneficial to an awesome pregnancy and postpartum experience.

What is Abhyanga Oil Massage and Marma Therapy?

Abhyanga oil massage, a traditional Ayurvedic practice that promotes relaxation, rejuvenation, and healing. With gentle strokes and warm oil, this massage offers mothers the opportunity to unwind, release tension, and restore balance to mind, body, and spirit.

Ayurveda highlights 108 marma points or energy points in the body. Marma points for postpartum provide additional support during the Abhyanga treatment and will help to bring relief to numerous physical and emotional discomforts.

What is belly binding/wrapping and are there benefits?

From an Ayurvedic perspective, belly binding grounds your nervous system by preventing air and space elements from entering the body, helps your organs come back into their proper positions, aids digestion, aids posture, and helps the new mother feel comforted ad secure. It’s like an all day hug that feels SO GOOD!

Does a postpartum doula replace my partner's role after birth?

A doula does not replace the role of your partner, but should rather complement or enhance the experience!

Your partner is also not a postpartum plan (as much as you may want them to be) as you’re both going through massive shifts and transitions.

Having another support person in the postpartum period  allows for your partner to take breaks when needed but for mama to continue to feel supported. Having a doula will also let the partner enjoy the experience more and creates more bonding time for partner and baby while the mother receives postpartum care.

If I know I want a Postpartum Doula, when should I reach out?

        The sooner, the better!

I recommend interviewing a couple doulas to see who would be the best fit for you.

Certain doulas specialize or offer different services than others. Neither is right or wrong, it just depends on what you’re looking for and what feels like the best fit for the mother and family.

Once you have that established and know that they have an opening for your estimated due date, you can get started with the process. Some doulas book out months in advance so it’s best to do it as soon as you know you want to work with one.

        Do you provide overnight support?

Weekday, daytime support between the hours of 9am-6pm is offered.

I am happy to offer referrals if you are looking for night or ongoing weekend support. I’ve got a great network!

How do I know if you're the right practitioner for me ?

If you connect with my approach, my values, and want personalized compassionate support chances are we will be a great fit!

You can get to know me better in the Mama Grown FB group community, where I offer free guidance and education for mamas like you who want to have babies and grow their families.

You can also book a complimentary clarity call designed to give us both an opportunity to make sure we feel great working together before moving forward.
